One of my favorite (and the easiest!) ways to save money is by stocking up on foods when the prices are at their lowest. I can buy foods for 50-60% of their regular prices. The best part about stocking up when things are on sale is that it doesn’t take a lot of my time. Just stock up to really save money on your grocery bill.
September will have some really great deals. September still has some great deals on in-season produce. I love to stock up on apples and make crock pot applesauce. Check out what to buy (and skip) in September to save.
Seasonal Produce
Apples will go on sale in September. Usually, I can find them for around $.59-$.69 a pound. I love buying lots of apples to make applesauce, apple butter, and apple pie. You can also store apples for a couple of months without putting them in the fridge. You can see all the details here.
We will also see some good sales on acorn squash, butternut squash, cantaloupe, cauliflower, eggplants, green beans, mushrooms, peppers, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. It’s a great time to stock up on fruits and veggies before the prices get higher in winter. Most of these vegetables can be stored for a while so you can really stock up.
Foods
Most of the kids are back in school and stores have some fantastic lunch deals. Peanut butter, jelly, etc. These foods tend to have a long shelf life so buy for the next 6-9 months. I usually will buy 10-15 jars of peanut butter when I can get them on sale for my homemade uncrustables.
Also, with Labor Day we will see grilling foods on sale. You can stock up on hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, and chips. Toward the end of September, fall foods like coffee, apple cider, and k-cups will be on sale too. Plus, September is national coupon month, so if you are a couponer look for some great coupons and deals.
Other Items
We should see lots of clearance deals in September. There will still be some summer clearance deals on summer toys and pool toys. We should also start seeing lots of clearance deals on back to school supplies. Outdoor items like patio sets and grills should be at the best prices, too. If you need a new lawnmower now is the best time to buy it. Plus, don’t forget to restock your kitchen with items like tupperware and lunch boxes with the back to school deals.
Skip
I am seeing Halloween stuff in the stores already, but skip it until it gets closer to the end of October. If you buy it now you won't get much of a discount. Also, skip most electronics this month. Most things like TV's and computers will be overpriced. It's best to hold off until November and the Black Friday sales.
So grab a couple of great deals this month to really save some extra cash. Want to know the best things to buy every month? Check out my what to buy and when? a guide to sales cycles. What do you plan on stocking up on in September?
