Inside: Dealing with a smelly garbage disposal? Check out these simple tips for getting rid of smells in your garbage disposal. Learn how to clean a smelly garbage disposal in minutes.
Garbage disposals make life so much easier! I love how I don't have to worry about small bits of food when I am washing dishes. I just run the garbage disposal when I am done washing them. Unfortunately, the downside to a garbage disposal is they can often get smelly.
Little bits of food left in the garbage disposal quickly leads to a very funky smell in the kitchen. However, in just a few minutes you can get rid of the nasty smells from the garbage disposal and have it smelling fresh again. Check out my favorite tips on how to clean a smelly garbage disposal.
To start you will need baking soda, vinegar, dawn soap, and an old toothbrush. I just use the freebie toothbrushes that we get when we go to the dentist.
Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the garbage disposal and then add 1/2 cup of vinegar on top of the baking soda. You will hear some fizzing when you do this, that is fine. Let the mixture sit in your drain for about 10-15 minutes. The vinegar will work to kill off any of the germs and bacteria that are in the smelly garbage disposal and the baking soda will help to get rid of the nasty smell.
Once it has set for about 10-15 minutes you can now start to clean it. Take the old toothbrush and add some dawn soap to it. Just enough to get it good and soapy. You will want to use the toothbrush to scrub inside the garbage disposal.
Scrub along the inside walls really well. Make sure you get both sides of the flaps too. Food particles tend to build up along the walls and flaps that create the bad smells. The toothbrush will help clean the smelly garbage disposal and the dawn soap will help break up any grease that is in the disposal.
Once you feel like you have the inside really scrubbed down then start running hot water down the drain for about 1-2 minutes while running the garbage disposal. This will really help clean out any of the leftover food particles and grease and wash it down the drain.
When you have thoroughly washed out the disposal you can run the toothbrush around the flaps and disposal one more time to make sure you have removed all of the dirt and grime. If it still comes out with dark stuff on the toothbrush I recommend repeating the process one more time.
These simple tips only take a few minutes to do but make such a huge difference in that smelly garbage disposal. You can easily get rid of any bad smells and have a fresh smelling kitchen once again.
