Inside: Dealing with a smelly garbage disposal? Check out this easy to make homemade garbage disposal cleaner. It combines lemon and baking soda to smell great!
Spring is almost here and I am trying to get my house clean and ready for summer.
One of my favorite things to do each spring is to give my kitchen a really good deep cleaning. You can see how I deep clean my kitchen here.
Last week while doing all my cleaning I noticed that my garbage disposal had a funky smell coming from it.
There is nothing more frustrating than a clean room that doesn't smell good. That's why I switched to natural cleaners!
I decided to make a homemade garbage disposal cleaner to get rid of the stink.
My garbage disposal and sink smells fantastic now!

Garbage Disposal Cleaner
I have a few different ways I get rid of smells from the garbage disposal. Sometimes, I just really clean it out well with a toothbrush to remove any food particles.
Then, sometimes I like to use ice to clean my garbage disposal and sometimes I use lemon or orange peels.
Both of them can easily get rid of smells and keep your garbage disposal clean.
This time I decided to combine the two and make a lemony ice cube.
To make this DIY garbage disposal cleaner you will need an ice cube tray, a lemon, and if you want baking soda.
I took some lemon peels and leftover lemons that I was going to throw away. They had been in my fridge for a while and are drying out.
You can also use lime or orange peels if that is what you have on hand.
I cut them up into small pieces that would fit in my ice cube tray.
Just make sure that you are cutting them up in smaller pieces so they will fit in whatever ice cube tray you are using.
If you don't have an ice cube tray you can put the lemon peels in a small Tupperware. Just make sure your container is small enough to fit in the garbage disposal.
Fill the tray the rest of the way with water. If your garbage disposal is really smelly or greasy then you can add a teaspoon or two of baking soda sprinkled over the ice cube tray.
Baking soda not only gets rid of smells, but it also absorbs any grease. By adding a bit to your homemade garbage disposal cleaner you will help fight smells and get rid of any grease.
Then, once you have everything in the tray place it in your freezer until it is frozen. I just left my DIY garbage disposal cubes in the freezer overnight.
Once they are fully frozen then you can start to use them.

Using The DIY Garbage Disposal Cleaner
Just dump one or two lemon ice cubes in the sink while running water and your garbage disposal.
I let the water and the disposal run for about a minute. It very quickly filled my kitchen with the lemon scent and my garbage disposal has been free of smells since.
Make sure that the lemons are completely gone before you stop running the garbage disposal. If there are any lemons that aren't completely pulverized it will start to smell again.
You can keep the rest of the cubes in your freezer and just pull one or two out every week or some.
The nice thing is if you leave them in the tray they will also keep your freezer from smelling bad. It's a win-win!
The best part is you don't need to buy anything, just use whatever citrus peels you have on hand and water. If you are buying lemons just for this use you can use the whole lemon if you choose.
